Overview

Institute of Oceanography (IOO) newly established as a division of the campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on 25th July 2013. It is subordinate to School of Naval Architectural, Ocean & Civil Engineering. Meng Zhou, who is involved in the National 1000 Talents Program, is nominated as the first head of IOO. Lian Lian, Dai Zhou, Kuncheng Fu and Xiang Xiao are appointed to be vice deans, Academician Jilan Su is the head of the Strategic Consulting Committee. The IOO conducts research on physical, chemical and biological oceanographic processes, marine technology, and marine social science. It explores, studies and predicts physical, chemical, biological and ecological phenomena and processes in the ocean; develops innovative marine technologies for ocean exploration, observation, sampling and marine operation; studies the policies for marine environment and resource protection and the law of the sea; and serves the public interests in sustainable ocean resource utilization and economy development, marine disaster prevention and mitigation, and national security.

The IOO conducts research on physical, chemical and biological oceanographic processes, marine technology, and marine social science.

Physical Oceanography
Observe, study and predict global–basin–mesoscale–submesoscale physical phenomena and processes, and their impacts on environmental, biogeochemical and ecosystem processes, marine engineering and operation, coastal safety and national security.

Chemical Oceanography
Observe, study and predict distributions, transport and cycling of chemical elements in the ocean, carbon sequestration, ocean acidification and climate change, and the interactions between anthropogenic influences and natural biogeochemical processes.

Biological Oceanography
Observe, study and predict distributions, behavior and ecosystem structures and functioning of marine organisms, and explore and study life in marine environment.

Marine Technology
Develop innovative technologies for exploration, observation, sampling and marine operation in the ocean; serve as a research and development center for marine technology industry, and support ocean science research.

Marine Social Science
Study policies and laws for marine environment protection, ocean resource protection and utilization, pollution regulations and seafood safety, and coastal land use and economy; study the law of the sea and strategies on ocean resource exploration, protection and utilization.
