Recently, three faculties from the School of Oceanography of Shanghai Jiao Tong University joined The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES). Professor Lei Zhou served as the chair of the Physical Oceanography and Climate Committee (POC) and joined the Scientific Board (SB). Associate Professor Yisen Zhong established the PICES 50th Working Group (WG 50) as co-chair. Tenure-track Assistant Professor Lixin Qu was elected as a member of the Advisory Panel: North Pacific Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (AP-NPCOOS).

The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), an intergovernmental science organization, was established in 1992 to promote and coordinate marine research in the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. Its present members are Canada, Japan, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America.

POC is one of the committees under PICES. POC’s main responsibility committee is to promote and coordinate research in physical and chemical oceanography, atmospheric sciences and related disciplines among the six member countries of the PICES organization. Its research focuses on climate change in the North Pacific, coastal and oceanic dynamic processes and their impact on marine ecology and the environment.

The Scientific Board (SB) is the executive body responsible for organizing and supervising the scientific activities of PICES, with 8 standing scientific and technical committees including POC. In addition, subcommittees, working groups, advisory groups and study groups at different levels are approved by SB.

The PICES Working Group 38 (WG 38) aims to review the current state of research on sub-mesoscale processes in the North Pacific, explore relevant regional hot scientific issues, and promote international cooperation among countries in these hotspot areas.

The Advisory Panel: North Pacific Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (AP-NPCOOS) is mainly responsible for carrying out practices, workshops and academic exchange activities for the coastal ocean observing systems.
