Shanghai Ocean Conference (SHOC) is hosted by the School of Oceanography (SOO), Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The meeting is a forum for scientists and researchers from the world to communicate scientific ideas and to seek research collaborations. The first SHOC– “Ocean Environment and Climate Interaction” held in June 2019 brought together more than 40 domestic and international scientists to discuss interactions between marine environment and climate change. In June 2020, the second SHOC was held, focusing on the scheme of “Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction at High Latitudes and their Climate Effects”. Nearly 400 scientists (including online participants) joined the forum and had intensive discussion on the ocean and climate at high latitude, the earth system, biogeochemistry, and global change.
the 1st and 2nd Shanghai Ocean Conference(SHOC)
From May 7 to 9, 2021, SOO will host the third SHOC, and the theme of this year will be “Extreme Ocean”. We would like to invite scientists and students, especially early-career scientists, to join the meeting. The topics include, but not limited to, the extreme weather and climate, extreme polar ocean environments, extreme biogeochemical processes under the global climate change. Let us work together for a transparent and sustainable ocean!
Featured Theme
- Extreme weather and climate
Under the climate change, extreme processes and disasters become more frequency, such as super typhoon, heat waves, extreme flood and drought, and the irregular ENSO. All these extremes have direct and significant impacts of human lives and socioeconomic development.
- Polar ocean environment
The polar regions play a significant role in modulating the global ocean circulation, ocean carbon fluxes, and extreme weather at mid and low latitudes. Polar physical and ecological processes are significantly affected by global climate change, and their variations also feedback to the earth climate system.
- Extreme biological environment
Such environment includes the deep ocean, and the extremely oligotrophic ocean. There are a huge heat content and carbon storage in such region, which is critical for the earth climate. Deep-sea has dynamic geological activities that enable it to have intensive material and energy exchanges with the deep earth. It is also a window to study the interaction of the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and other layers.
Overall, the third SHOC focuses on the “Extreme Ocean”, covering the physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography in extreme conditions.
