Research Directions:

1. Development of the high-resolution and shipboard method: to establish high precision and automatic analysis based on elements and isotope gas analysis system for environment monitoring and physical-biogeochemistry processes in order to gain better understanding in the climate changes and interaction with human activities.

2. Climate change research: Use high-precision isotopic analysis of chemical compounds in ice cores, atmosphere, sediments and ocean, as a proxy to reconstruct climate in the past and to estimate ocean productivities. This study helps to understand the evolution of global carbon cycle, the changes in biological productivities, and the dynamics of carbon dioxide concentration over Earth history, especially for glacial and interglacial time period. Paleoclimate research plays a vital role in understanding the Earth system and provides important archives for predicting future climate change.

3. Key marine biogeochemical processes: to investigate the source and sink of nutrients and trace metals in the ocean, and the transportation, geochemical processes, cycling and their impact on ecosystem and climate changes.
